Clingen Castle is a property belonging to the municipality of Clingen in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia .

location

The castle site is in the valley of the Helbe at the site of the later domain. Routes from south to north and west to east were probably the reason for the construction on the west side of the village of Clingen.

history

Hardly anything can be seen of the castle on the west side of the village of Clingen today. The deep moat filled with water is still preserved. Therefore the building had low walls and a high tower. The year 1584 is immortalized in the gate. To the east of this complex is a two-storey half - timbered building that was built in 1542–1584.

Reinhard von Greußen, mentioned in 1227, probably sat in the castle. Landgrave Albrecht commissioned Count Dietrich von Hohenstein in 1268 to build castles in this area in order to protect the land and the population. Later the property was used by a bailiff . In 1356 the Counts of Schwarzburg inherited the castle and town. In 1552 they had a castle built elsewhere. In 1553 the construction was stopped. The old castle was still well preserved, as Johann Günther I still held court here in 1577/78 . Parts of the castle were later demolished and the castle-like house moved into. Today the municipal administration is housed in the house.
