The Cotroceni Castle (Romanian Palatul Cotroceni ) is located in Bucharest in the Cotroceni district.

history

In 1679, Prince Șerban I. Cantacuzino (1640–1688) had a monastery built on the Cotroceni Hill. Cotroceni Castle was built in 1888 on behalf of King Charles I according to plans by the French architect Paul Gottereau in the monastery complex to serve as a royal residence. Most of the ovens were supplied by Sommerhuber . In addition to the official Cotroceni residence in the capital, the Peleș and Pelișor castles served the royal family from the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen dynasty as summer residences.

Cotroceni Castle was later renovated by the Romanian architect Grigore Cerchez. Nicolae Ceaușescu had the old monastery church torn down during his tenure. In 1991, the Cotroceni National Museum was opened in the first two wings of the castle. The third wing is now the official residence of the Romanian President (presidential palace).
