Friedensburg Castle
The Friedensburg Castle , the former castle Leutenberg is a castle fortress above the Sormitztal in Leutenberg in the southeast of Thuringia . It was the residence of the Counts of Schwarzburg -Leutenberg, dates back to the early 16th century and is now used as a special dermatological hospital .
history
The building history of the castle begins in the 9th century when Slavic tribes built a refuge on the hill, where they could seek protection from the Sorbs from the east. A medieval castle can be traced back to the 14th century. It was the seat of the ministerials of Lutenburg (Leutenberg), first mentioned in 1187 . The Counts of Schwarzburg-Leutenberg later followed as lords of the castle (between 1362 and 1564). In the 16th century there were constant inheritance disputes between Schwarzburgers , Leutenbergers and the Counts of Orlamünde , which led to the castle being called Friedensburg after these feuds ended (first documented in writing in 1718). Between 1491 and 1525 building activity began again on the castle, which gave it its current appearance. In the years that followed, the castle was repeatedly ravaged by fires, for example in 1567, 1695, 1726, 1800 and 1934. During the last fire in 1934, the castle was badly damaged and a large part of the historic interior, such as the chapel, was destroyed . After the reconstruction, the castle, which had been in state ownership since 1935, served as a holiday home and later as a house for the GDR's Council of Ministers . Between 1991 and 1993 it was again comprehensively renovated and has served as a specialist hospital for dermatology ever since.
