Hinterndobl Castle is a hilltop castle in the village of Hinterndobl in the village of Dorf an der Pram in the Schärding district of Upper Austria.

history

The actual builder of Schloss Hinterndobl is not known. The castle is mentioned for the first time in 1560, its owner at that time was Leonhard Puchner (also spelled Puechner), keeper of Erlach, who obtained the elevation of the emperor to a noble seat. The son Christoph Puchner was the builder of the Puchberg Castle near Wels . The daughter Maria got Hinterndobl as marriage property when she married Hans Christian Wiellinger (Willinger) in 1570. A son from this marriage was the well-known peasant leader Achaz Wiellinger von der Au auf Hinterndobl, who was executed in Linz in 1627 . Despite the execution of Achaz Wiellinger, Hinterndobl remained in the family's possession, as his son Johann Ernst (married in second marriage to Anna Renata, née von Clam) had converted to the Catholic faith again. Anna Renata died on January 15, 1690, Johann Ernst on August 3 of the same year. In 1731 the property came to Maria Eleonora Wiellinger's marriage to her husband, Baron Johann Ludwig von Gablkoven. Their son Achaz sold the estate together with Schloss Innersee in 1777 to Ernst Ignaz Gemberly, knight of Weidenthal; The transfer of the property then followed the same inheritance as the Innersee Castle for about 100 years until 1870, then the property was divided up. The castle served for a long time as a brewery and as an inn (formerly the “Zum Bräu” inn).

Building history

The Hinterndobl Castle has not changed much in the past 300 years until recently. The four watch towers recognizable on the engraving by Vischer have long since disappeared, as has the double-hewn roof. The attached Maierhof had already lost the existing stable wing, but was connected to the main wing via an arbor wing. Today this has also disappeared; instead, there is an extension with round arches with open arcades. The former castle chapel was about 100 m away from the castle; it was removed in 1930. Inside the main building, a hallway runs through the entire house. It is equipped with a ribbed vault. Gothic wood beam ceilings and door frames from the 16th century have been preserved on the upper floor. The current owner Josef Kaltenböck has converted the castle into a residential property with 16 apartments. In addition to the spacious residential complex, the former castle is also intended to serve as a peasant war memorial, according to a plaque in front of the entrance.
