Jessen Castle

The Castle Jessen is located in Jessen (Elster) , Wittenberg district and is under monument protection .

history

Towards the end of the 12th century, a tower hill with a wooden defense tower was built for the first time at the current location of the castle . The tower hill castle was about 34 meters in diameter and was expanded at the beginning of the 13th century by an approximately five-meter-high circular wall made of bricks. Archbishop Wichmann from the Archdiocese of Magdeburg was probably the builder of the facility. At the end of the 13th century the castle became the property of the County of Brehna . At the beginning of the 16th century, Elector Friedrich the Wise acquired the complex and bequeathed it to his illegitimate sons Friedrich and Sebastian, who later called themselves von Jessen . In October 1813, Blücher , Yorck and Tauentzien used the castle as their headquarters during the Wars of Liberation . In the second half of the 19th century the building was used as a cloth factory and since 1999 the seat of the Jessen town council has been located in the castle.

building

Today's two-story building from the 18th century follows the dimensions and shape of the original castle complex. In 1752 the north wing was raised by one floor. The renovation work carried out during the 19th century included the construction of an octagonal tower. There is an alliance coat of arms from 1706 on the main portal.
