The Laubegg Castle is located on the territory of the municipality Ragnitz in the district of Leibnitz in Styria .

history

Laubegg, which originally belonged to the Eppenstein family, became the property of the Mureck family and finally fell to the Wildon family . In the vicinity of today's cadastral community of Laubegg, where the castle of the same name is located, there used to be a ferry across the Mur . Ullinus de Lovbeke, a follower of the Wildoners, was first mentioned here in 1254. In 1302 Hartnid III. von Wildon ceded his own Laubegg as compensation to the diocese of Seckau and was able to get it back as a fief. In 1308 the Wildon castle and the Laubegg lordship were lost to the Grazer Walseer and after their extinction in 1363 the lords of Pettau took over the episcopal fief. After the death of the last Pettauer Friedrich IX. in 1438 his daughter Agnes transferred the rule to King Friedrich III. , the future emperor, which gave them sovereign status.

In 1532 the complex was destroyed in the first Austrian Turkish War and in 1561 the rebuilding of the castle began. There was a good line of sight between the castle and neighboring fortifications, which is why a chalk fire station was set up as a warning system.

Laubegg Castle was in changing hands in the following centuries, among other things as a novitiate house until it was used as a Gau training castle in 1940 . In the period after World War II and the occupation by Soviet and British troops, extensive renovation work began on the exterior facade and in the interior. In the recent past, the building was used as a nursing home for the elderly as well as a rest home for Caritas . Since 2004 the training and operations center of the Styrian Red Cross , which is now the owner, has been located in the premises of the castle.
