Leiben Castle

The Leiben is a castle in the market town of Leiben in Lower Austria .

history

The castle was built around 1113 by the Knights of Leiben, who lived here until 1332. In 1617 it was sold to Hans Christian Geyer von Osterburg. Under his rule the castle got its present form. The stronghold is a four-story, irregular building with towers and a pentagonal arcade courtyard with a clock tower and another small inner courtyard. The culturally significant coffered ceilings from the 17th century in the prayer and knight hall are the work of an unknown artist. They show mythological and allegorical scenes as well as spiritual devotional images. In 1796 the palace came into the hands of the imperial and royal family. This family fund was used to support the family members and was set up with part of the assets of Emperor Franz I. The General Management of the Fund became an independent authority. In Luberegg Castle near Emmersdorf, an inspectorate was set up for the administration of the rulers of the family fund in the southern Waldviertel. Pictures and documents from this period have been preserved in the nearby Artstetten Castle. After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in 1919 the entire property was handed over to the Invalidenfonds for administration. From 1945 it was in the administration of the Austrian Federal Forests .

In 1989 the castle was acquired by the market town of Leiben. After a renovation, it is now used regularly for events. An agricultural technology museum has been located in the castle since 1991 . It shows agricultural tractors from 1910, including accessories, as well as numerous models and documentation of the historical development of agricultural technology.
