The Neideck Castle is a former moated castle in Thuringia Arnstadt ( Ilm-Kreis ). Today it is only preserved as a ruin , except for the castle tower .

history

The castle was built between 1553 and 1560 by Count Günther XLI. erected by Schwarzburg . It was built in the Renaissance style on the foundation wall of a castle owned by the Hersfeld abbots , which was mentioned as early as 1273.

Neideck Castle became the seat of the Counts of Schwarzburg-Arnstadt , making Arnstadt a royal seat . When Prince Anton Günther II died in 1716, the residence was moved to Sondershausen . The castle was now almost empty and was also used as a stable. Stones were removed to build bridges. Decay began, and finally the castle partially collapsed in 1779. In April 1945 the tower was damaged by American artillery fire. Until 2015, Neideck Castle served as the external backdrop of the boarding school building in the Einstein Castle television series .

Current condition

In 1998/1999 the 65 meter high castle tower was restored and is accessible. In addition, the remains of the ruin have been uncovered and secured in recent years. A 1:20 scale model of the castle was built on the grounds of the castle and can be viewed daily together with other miniature buildings. In the nearby gardener's house of the castle, built around 1650, a model of the city of Arnstadt around 1740 on a scale of 1: 200 has been built.
