Penningby Castle

Penningby Castle ( Swedish Penningby slott ) near Norrtälje in the historic Uppland province is a castle from the Wasa era .

history

Penningby was first mentioned around 1330, in the 14th century a medieval castle was built on the square. This was replaced by a castle, the construction of which was started by Birgitta Tordsdotter Bonde . In 1831 the castle was ravaged by fire. The roof and tower were changed in the course of the subsequent renovation.

The castle consists of an almost square central building and two diagonally arranged round corner towers. The two lower floors are made of gray stone. The two floors above, which were probably added in the course of the 15th century, were built by Lars Turesson (Tre Rosor) .

The castle is no longer inhabited, but there are guided tours for visitors and tourists in summer.
