Pottschach Castle

Pottschach Castle is a renaissance water castle and is located in Pottschach in Lower Austria . The parish church of Pottschach and the castle form a common defense system. It is privately owned and cannot be viewed.

history

In the place of today's castle there was originally a moated castle. In 1134 a Gunterus de Pottschach is mentioned for the first time as a servant of the Formbach family . Thereafter the castle was owned by ministerials of the Otakare . In the 13th century the rule went to the lords of Kranichberg and in 1254 to the sovereign. In 1493 the castle was sold to the Hagen and then changed hands several times. In 1539 the rule went to the Lords of Ursenbeck . The castle was torn down under Bernhard Ursenbeck and a moated castle was built in the Renaissance style. In 1687 it was sold to the Baron von Pach, and in 1712 ownership passed to the Counts of Walsegg. The princes von und zu Liechtenstein acquired the castle between 1830 and 1832 . Princess Franziska von Liechtenstein had the moats filled in and the porch razed. In 1891 the Figdor family bought the castle and renovated it.

Building description

The castle is a rectangular, three-story building with turrets at the corners on the third floor. Although it is a castle, it is very well built. There are only peeping windows and loopholes on the third floor. This building is surrounded on three sides by a wall and four towers. Originally there was also a porch in front of the castle, which was razed under Franziska von Liechtenstein.
