Saabor Castle

Saabor Castle ( Polish Zamek w Zaborze ) is located in the Polish Zabór (Saabor near Grünberg ), Lebus Voivodeship .

history

An original medieval moated castle was after 1683 by Johann Heinrich Graf of Dünewald an early Baroque castle rebuilt. Its history is closely linked to Saxon history. In 1744 Friedrich August Graf von Cosel , son of Augustus the Strong , became the owner of the Saabor estate and had the castle, which was destroyed in a fire in 1745, replaced by a Rococo castle. A baroque garden was created as a square complex between the castle and the Great Lake ( Jezioro Zabór ). After 1791 the von Schoenaich-Carolath owned the property. These had the castle park transformed into a landscape park. The last owner was from 1918 Hermine von Reuss .

With the Polish takeover of the region, the castle was devastated. Initially an agricultural training center was housed here, from 1956 a tuberculosis center, since the 1980s a children's sanatorium, which was converted into a child and adolescent psychiatry after 1998. In connection with this use, an additional building was built on the courtyard side. Today the park belongs to the clinic and is well maintained. However, the view of the lake has grown over and the part of the park near the lake has become swampy.

Building ensemble

A driveway that leads to a courtyard-like square surrounded by gentleman's houses forms a central axis that is continued in the central axis of the palace and in the park. The castle is three-story and includes an arcade courtyard. The portal of the courtyard entrance bears the alliance coat of arms of the Princes of Carolath-Beuthen from 1680. On the courtyard side is the Corps de Logis with a tympanum and the coat of arms of Friedrich August Cosel. The side wings are each closed by a tower, of which only the western one has an onion dome and a lantern. Inside, the ballroom has been restored with preserved rococo stucco. The main axis of the garden was accentuated by fountain basins.
