Herbert Harrison Heyes (born August 3, 1889 in Vader , Washington , † May 31, 1958 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor in theater, television and silent and sound films.

life and career

Herbert Heyes was already on stage at an early age and at the age of 20 was the main actor in a traveling theater group. He was already a well-known actor when he was hired by Fox Film Corporation in 1916 . In the following years he made a total of five silent films with Theda Bara . From around 1924 he retired from the film business for almost 20 years. During this time he worked in New York as a theater and radio actor.

From 1942 Heyes was again regularly in front of the camera for Hollywood films, with the now graying character actor now playing supporting roles. In the mid-1940s he took on roles in four Broadway plays. In the 1950s, Heyes played mostly dignified minor characters, often of socially respected rank, including judges, generals, politicians or priests. His best-known roles include the wealthy factory owner and uncle of Montgomery Clift's main character in the Oscar-winning drama A Place in the Sun (1951), the future father-in-law of Ronald Reagan in the comedy Bedtime for Bonzo (1951) and an experienced reporter in Samuel Fuller's film noir Park Row (1952). His last film role was a small appearance in the monumental film The Ten Commandments , but in the year of his death he appeared on US television in two television series in guest roles. Overall, Heyes was seen in a total of over 130 film and television productions between 1915 and 1958.

Herbert Heyes was married to the actress Mildred von Hollen (1891–1971) from 1913. The couple had two children, including future actor and screenwriter Douglas Heyes . After divorcing Mildred van Hollen, Heyes married Helen Millard Ward in 1934, with whom he remained married until his death.
