Schrems Castle
The Schrems castle stands between the Braunbach Bridge and the Budweiserstraße on Dr.-Theodor-Körner-Platz no. 1 in the municipality of Schrems in the district of Gmünd in Lower Austria . The castle is under monument protection ( list entry ).
history
Schrems broke away from Gmünd around 1635 . After 1635 the castle was built for the Schrems reign. Structural changes were made between 1777 and 1781 after a fire in 1777. The main facade was enriched in design around 1890. 1966 was a restoration.
The castle has been owned by the municipality since 1928 and was used as a school and postal garage in 1990.
architecture
The early baroque two-storey four-wing building, which was later changed, was originally surrounded by a moat.
The 16-axis west facade and the 12-axis south facade are the show facades. In the west and south there are also corner bay windows with bellied approaches. The south front has two symmetrical early baroque portals under split gables with crowning double coat of arms Osy-Bartenstein (1790–1865). The double coat of arms of Thurn-Vrints (1896–1917) around 1890 is summarized in the triangular gable.
The passages into the inner courtyard are vaulted with a groin. the arcades in the inner courtyard are walled up on the west side. The stables were originally located in the south wing as a two-aisled, three-bay hall with groin vaults made from Tuscan columns. The south-western corner hall has a geometric stucco frame with a double-headed eagle in a cartouche around 1670. The staircase is a two-flight staircase around a central shaft.
