Torup is one of the best preserved medieval castles in Scandinavia with a history that goes back to around 980. The building has three floors and is mainly made of bricks . The square floor plan is followed by an octagonal tower in the northwest and a round tower in the southeast.

Directly at the castle is a 365 hectare recreational area with walking, jogging and riding trails that lead through a beech forest. A storage building from the 18th century was set up as a gathering place for visitors. There are changing rooms, a weight training center and a café .

history

The construction of today's castle was started in the middle of the 16th century by the Danish landowner Görvel Fadersdotter from the aristocratic family Sparre. Through her third husband, Reichsrat Lave Brahe (1500–1567), the castle came to the Grubbe family. During this time the castle was often visited by King Christian IV , who gave his soldiers the order to dam a lake around the building. This lake existed until 1775. In the following time Torup belonged among others to Corfitz Ulfeldt , the Danish royal house and the aristocratic Beck family.

In the 1790s the Austrian estate manager Franz Xaver Schober (1759-1802) lived here, whose four children were born here, including the poet Franz von Schober (1796-1882).

In 1811 1,000 to 1,500 servants gathered at Torup Castle to protest against Karl XIV. Johann and the nationwide compulsory inspection . This led to a peasant uprising , which was bloodily suppressed shortly afterwards.

The castle went to the Stjernblad family and the court marshal Gustaf Julius Coyet (1775–1862), who had the dilapidated building renovated. The castle came to the Otto von Leithners family through marriage in the 20th century, who sold it to the city of Malmö in 1970 . The heirs of the von Leithner family have a right of use until 2035.
