Vallø Castle

Vallø Castle is located on the Danish island of Zealand , 7 km south of Køge in Vallø Municipality .

The history of Vallø can be traced back to the 13th century ; it was first mentioned in documents around 1285. However, only remains of this early development can be found. The south and west wings in their current form and the two characteristic towers were built by Mette Rosenkrantz in 1586 , while the other wings were built in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Several Danish noble families (including Falk, Krage, Rosenkrantz and Skeel ) owned the castle over the years. In 1708 King Friedrich IV. Acquired Vallø for his wife on the left hand and later queen, Anna Sophie Reventlow . His son Christian VI. transferred the property in 1737 to his wife Sophie Magdalene von Brandenburg-Kulmbach , who founded a women's foundation for unmarried noble daughters there, which existed until 1976. Since then, the income from the large property (approx. 4,300 hectares) has been used for charitable purposes. In 1976, under the name "Borreholm", the castle was used as a backdrop for the film "Olsen-Gangs ser rødt" ( The Olsen Gang sees red ).
