Anna Sophie von Reventlow, Queen of Denmark

Anna Sophie von Reventlow (born April 16, 1693 at Clausholm Castle ; † January 7, 1743 ibid) was the wife of King Frederick IV of Denmark and Queen of Denmark from 1721 to 1730 .

Life

Countess Anna Sophie was a daughter of the Danish Chancellor Conrad von Reventlow from his second marriage to Sophie Amalie von Hahn (1664-1722) and half-sister of General Christian Detlev von Reventlow .

She met Friedrich IV in 1711 at a masked ball and fell in love with the 22-year-old monarch. A year later they kidnapped the king and the two joined in 1712 in Skanderborg a morganatic marriage . From then on Anna Sophie carried the title Duchess of Schleswig . A few days after Queen Louise's death , on April 4, 1721, she formally married Frederick IV and was crowned queen.

To this day, Anna Sophie Reventlow is the only Danish queen who did not come from a princely family. The Reventlow family belongs to the Danish-German nobility .

The wedding led to a break in the royal family, Crown Prince Christian loathed his stepmother deeply, Prince Carl and Princess Sophie Hedwig, siblings of Frederick IV, left Copenhagen. Anna Sophie's family, referred to as "the Reventlow gang", gained great political influence. After the king's death in 1730, Anna Sophie was expelled from Copenhagen and died on her property in Clausholm near Randers on Jutland.
