Vittskövle Castle

The Vittskövle Castle is one of the best preserved Renaissance castles in Sweden . It is located near the village of Vittskövle , about 20 kilometers south of the city of Kristianstad .

Vittskövle Castle was built around 1550 by the Dane Jens Axelsen Brahe. It is a square, three-storey brick castle with two round towers that are diagonally opposite each other. Until the conquest of Skåne by Sweden in 1658, it was armed with cannons.

The castle is surrounded by a moat and gardens that were laid out in the 18th century. The castle was renovated at the beginning of the 19th century. The interior of the castle also dates from this period.

The castle is described in the third chapter of Selma Lagerlöf's novel The wonderful journey of little Nils Holgersson with the wild geese . It has been under monument protection as Byggnadsminne since 1966 .
