The Yverdon Castle ( French Château d'Yverdon ) is a castle in Switzerland, in the area of Vaud Municipality Yverdon-les-Bains is located.
history
The castle was built by Jacques de Saint-Georges from 1260 to 1270 on the orders of Peter II , with the aim of protecting the city. The castle was initially inhabited by the Savoy feudal lords, after the conquest by the Bernese in 1536 by the bailiffs appointed by Bern.
After Vaud became an independent canton in 1803, the city of Yverdon bought the castle so that Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi , who was already a renowned pedagogue, could set up his school there. The castle subsequently served as a school from 1838 to 1974.
The castle has also been home to the Musée d'Yverdon et Région since 1830. Nowadays it is also used for the temporary exhibitions of the Swiss Fashion Museum. The castle is registered in the inventory of cultural assets of national importance .
