Shmuel Elijahu (born November 29, 1956 in Israel ) is an Israeli rabbi from Safed . He belongs to the supreme rabbinical council in Israel and is known in the Israeli public for right-wing extremist positions.

Early years

Shmuel Eliyahu is the son of Mordechai Eliyahu , the former Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel. He studied at the Jerusalem Yeshiva Jaschlaz and later at the Merkas HaRaw Kook .

Career

After graduating, he became Chief Rabbi of Schlomi , Israel. Three years later he became Chief Rabbi of Safed. In July 2013, he applied for the position of Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel. The Israeli attorney general asked him to withdraw his candidacy. The reason for this were inciting remarks in previous years. The member of the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) Issawi Frej filed an urgent petition to the Supreme Court , which it should prohibit Eliyahu to apply for this position, as he had made racist comments, which would destroy the values of the State of Israel.

Elijahu has published several books, including books on halakha .

Views

Area bombing

According to a May 30, 2007 report in The Jerusalem Post , Elijahu promoted area bombing of the Gaza Strip areas from which Qassam rockets were fired on Israel. In doing so, no consideration should be given to the lives of Palestinians. He is also reported to have said the following: “If they don't stop after 100 deaths, we must kill a thousand. If they don't stop after 1,000 deaths, we'll have to kill 10,000. If they still don't stop then we have to kill 100,000 or even a million. Whatever it takes, you have to stop. "

State acts of revenge

In March 2008, he called for "state acts of revenge" against Arabs . According to Haaretz , he wanted the children of the terrorist who carried out the massacre of the Merkas HaRaw Kook to be hanged from a tree.

Demand for a religious prime minister

Elijahu called for a religious prime minister. He referred to former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and said that he was "without belief, without credibility and without values".

Rent to Arabs

In 2010 Elijahu urged the Jews of Tzfat not to rent houses to Arabs. This led to significant protests in Israel.

Recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel

After US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in December 2017 and announced the relocation of the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Shmuel Elijahu and 250 other Israeli Orthodox rabbis wrote a letter to Trump in which his Israel -Politics was praised: "May God's promise to Joshua (1: 9) be fulfilled in you."
