Schneidersgarten is a 1.3 hectare urban park in the Magdeburg district of Sudenburg . It is the only park in the district. It is enclosed in the south by Schneidersgartenstrasse, in the east by Jordanstrasse, in the north by Dürerstrasse and in the west by Brunnerstrasse.

history

The current area of the park belonged to an estate of the landlord Wilhelm Schneider, which was laid out in 1860 north of the still undeveloped Halberstädter Straße . The manor also included a chicory kiln .

Schneider had laid out a small park with curved paths behind his villa on the property, Schneider's garden .

From 1904, the sale of parcels and the redevelopment of Halberstädter Straße in the urban style began. Between 1909 and 1914 all buildings, except for the Schneider house, were demolished. In 1922, Mr. Johannes Schneider moved to Munich. The Schneider estate was over.

In the course of the development of the area with multi-storey residential construction, the citizens of Sudenburg campaigned from 1905 to keep the park created by the Schneider family as a public park. On August 30, 1905, a Sudenburg citizens' initiative sent a corresponding letter to the magistrate of Magdeburg. In fact, City Councilor Walther then contacted Johannes Schneider , the owner at the time, to sound out the possibility of the city buying the green space. The negotiations dragged on until 1910. The city accommodated Schneider with the design of the development plan and made it possible for the remaining Schneider property to be built on the edge of the building that was advantageous for him. In return, the city received the park at a reasonable price. In a contract signed on July 6, 1910, it was also regulated that the grave sites of the Schneider family in the park could remain unchanged in the park for 30 years. Later it was planned to place the tombstones in a new church to be built in Sudenburg. The eight tombstones are still in the same place in the park today.

The area around the park is now closely built up with multi-storey residential buildings.

In 1928 and 1958, the network of paths in the park was redesigned. In 1942 , an extinguishing water pond was set up in the park for reasons of air protection, which was removed again in later years. There is a children's playground in the northeast corner.

In 1992 the park was redeveloped. In 1993 the park was listed as a historical monument .
