Schnitzler (family)

The Schnitzler family is an Austro-Jewish family who moved from Hungary to Austria in the 19th century .

The oldest known family member is Johann Schnitzler (1835-1893). He became known as a doctor and as the founder of the General Vienna Polyclinic .

The eldest of his sons was the writer Arthur Schnitzler (1862–1931). Another son was the university professor and physician Julius Schnitzler (1865-1939). One sister was Gisela (1867-1953). She was not properly married to Markus Hajek.

Arthur's marriage with Olga Gussmann (1882–1970) had two children. The actor and director Heinrich Schnitzler (1902–1982), who also provided access to his father's estate, and their daughter Lili (1909–1928).

Heinrich's son is the musician and conservationist Michael Schnitzler (* 1944). He returned to Austria from the United States, where his family could emigrate before the National Socialists. The Austrian rainforest in Costa Rica goes back to his initiative .
