Shock (peat)

Shock was a German piece and counting measure in the peat industry, especially in Hanoverian and Breslau peat extraction areas. The dimension was important as the basis for pricing and the calculation of transport costs . The peat sod, or brick, as the smallest unit, was 90 cubic inches in volume , which is 3 1/8 cubic feet . A peat diggers and an assistant to settle managed on day 2,500 pieces or 50 shock. After drying, one always put on piles to shock.

  • 1 shock = 50 pieces
  • 36 shock = 1800 peat sods (referred to as four-horse Fuder)
  • 30 shock = 93 ¾ cubic feet = 1 charge (referred to as a two-horse charge)

The volume of this load corresponded to about one load .
