A relieving posture describes an unnatural posture for pain relief, which an injured person usually adopts unconsciously and spontaneously in severe pain. In first aid and emergency services , relieving postures can be supported to relieve pain and serve as clues for the type of injury. If a reliever posture is taken for a long time, this can lead to tension and circulatory disorders and damage parts of the body in the long term.
Acute relieving postures
A gentle posture is taken for symptoms and injuries that cause severe pain; especially with broken bones , joint injuries, herniated discs , colic and other diseases affecting the abdomen. In the case of an acute abdomen, for example, the relieving posture (legs drawn up) should relax the abdominal wall; the person affected can be supported by a knee roll (with supported feet). In the case of broken bones, the assumed relieving posture can often also be supported; aids such as a triangular cloth are used here.
Damage from long-term relieving postures
A gentle posture can result in a gentle gait (see: Painful limping ). If a reliever posture is taken for a longer period of time, one-sided muscle strain can lead to tension, circulatory disorders and a restriction of the musculoskeletal system, which then lead to pain again. For example, people suffering from osteoarthritis often develop a pain-related relieving posture, which has a short-term pain-relieving effect, but puts additional strain on the joint. Through physical therapy is therefore trying to prevent these unwanted consequences.
