Screw thaler Ferdinand II

Schraubmünzen , Schraubtaler or Schraubmedaillen called coins consisting of two with a threaded consist provided parts.

The manufacture of screw coins ranges from the end of the 16th to the first half of the 20th century; the majority was produced in Augsburg , but Nuremberg and Vienna also dealt with the production.

Most of the specimens are circular and consist of two parts, but there are also various variants. Screw coins can be divided into three large groups:

  • The early examples show oil-painted pictures on the inside of the lid ;
  • the thalers, which were mainly made between 1650 and 1730, contain representations on parchment , paper or glass ;
  • the objects produced from 1730 onwards are signed and contain copperplate engravings.

A modern variant are screw-on coins that were used by agents for the inconspicuous transport of microfilms or documents.
