A writing level ( limnograph ) is a measuring device for determining the water level in bodies of water, in containers and the groundwater level in the ground. In contrast to staff levels, write levels continuously record the level .

The first type of writing level had a float that was connected to the precisely balanced counterweight via a cable . The changes in height of the swimmer were transmitted by means of a toothed rack to a pen, which transmitted the level to a recording drum, similar to the barograph . The recording was first made with ink, later on more secure wax paper .

A further developed design is the compressed air diving level, at which the water level is registered as a change in the internal air pressure via a U-shaped measuring line in the form of a culvert . The data can be transmitted via a thin pressure line or electrically to the so-called remote level , which is housed in a conveniently located level house.

Write levels facilitate and refine the periodic readings of the level. The permanent registration also allows quick graphic representations over longer periods of time and thus facilitates z. B. the determination of a long-term mean water .

Today's writing levels are fully automated on a digital basis and only need inspections and maintenance at long intervals.
