The Shrine Madonna (French: Vierge ouvrante ) is the name given to medieval wooden Marian sculptures that can be opened and that contain figurative representations (e.g. mercy seat ) inside . The origin of the type is unclear (France or East Elbe). A special form that has not been preserved was the " Vierges tabernacles" for storing a consecrated host .
