SchulRadar was a German-language website for exchanging views on primary and secondary schools in Germany. Parents were able to assign grades for their children's schools on the platform.

background

School radar was launched in April 2008. The initiators of the site are the operators of the thematically related and controversial student network spickmich , on which students could grade their teachers and their school.

According to the operator, Schulradar should “serve parents in Germany as a source of information about potential schools for their children”. In 2008, 32,000 German schools were recorded in the database. 40,000 parents registered who had given around 100,000 ratings.

On August 12, 2014, the site with its sister site was shut down spickmich.

Functions

The users could register in a certain role , e.g. B. as a parent or teacher. Since June 2008 there have been certified user accounts for school principals.

Schulradar offered the various user groups several options for exchanging opinions and information: In addition to the criticized evaluation function, there was a school search - broken down by school type -, information on the school profile and nationwide top lists of all schools evaluated so far.

Furthermore, quotes from teachers and a forum were offered as a discussion area on various topics.

School evaluation

All secondary schools and primary schools in Germany could be assessed. There were 6 criteria for which parents can submit grades: Individual support, condition of buildings / equipment, teachers, school management, activities accompanying lessons, school climate.

Each registered member was allowed to grade a total of 5 schools. The evaluation was made anonymously, except for written comments. Users also had the opportunity to post photos of schools and to answer the question whether they would like to attend this school themselves.

In addition, the grades that students gave for their schools on spickmich were transferred to the school radar.

criticism

Since it was launched, the platform has often come under fire due to the principle of public school evaluation:

The reduction of the school image to a few evaluation criteria is one of the controversial aspects, as is the anonymity of the votes, which makes the system prone to abuse.

For these reasons, many school principals were skeptical of the platform - criticism of schools as such is appropriate, but not in this way.

In February 2009, some of the anonymous comments written by parents prompted the Hamburg school authorities to file an injunction against school radar at the Hamburg Regional Court . The case will be heard in April 2009. A contribution by the TV show Stern TV on January 28, 2009 via the Internet portal in connection with the lawsuit from Hamburg provoked further criticism of both schools and parents involved in school radar.
