Protection converter

Protection converter is a term from electrical engineering . Protection converters are used to control protection relays .

To protect circuits , the power supply must be switched off in the event of a fault . For this purpose, the current flowing through is monitored. While normal current transformers only work proportionally up to the nominal current and the magnetic core of the transformer quickly saturates in the event of an overload, protection transformers have to work proportionally up to a high overload range. The saturation limit must be well above the normal working range.

The dimensioning of these converters must usually ensure a proportional current transmission of up to 5 times the primary rated current. Converters with an iron-closed core without an air gap, (with TPX characteristic), would become saturated due to the special course of the short-circuit current, which initially has a DC component, if they are not significantly oversized. In this case, converters with an anti-remanence air gap in the core (TPY characteristic), which have an air gap in the iron path to lower the magnetic flux, or those with a linear core (TPZ characteristic), which have several air gaps in the iron path.
