Enthusiast (mechanical manufacturing)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Schwärmer (English: flyer) are mostly used in the mechanical processing of workpieces on turning , milling or grinding machines.

purpose

The swarmer serves as an auxiliary support for the storage of workpieces with irregular or unmachined surfaces in a steady rest . Irregular workpieces such as B. screw conveyors or rectangular tubes could not be clamped in a bezel without swarmers. In the case of unprocessed cylindrical workpieces, the use of a swarm eliminates the need to prepare a steady rest, which is sometimes not possible or not economical.

As a rule, enthusiasts are not manufactured and offered as series products because they are almost always tailored to the respective application. Often, enthusiasts are also manufactured and further developed by the processing companies themselves.

Structure and mode of operation

The hawker usually consists of a support ring with a precisely manufactured radial outer running surface. At least three clamping bolts in the form of quills or simple threaded rods are distributed over its circumference , which clamp the workpiece located in the swarmer in a clearly defined position relative to the outer running surface of the swarmer. In series production, swarmers can also be equipped with clamping jaws specially tailored to the workpiece . This enables the workpiece to be centered quickly and precisely in the swarm.

Once the workpiece is aligned and fixed in the swarm, all mechanical processing on the workpiece can be carried out as usual with the help of a steady rest.
