Schwabe's garden
Schwabes Garten is the preserved garden of the former property of the Jewish Schwabe (-Barlewin) family in Varel .
The family had lived in a corner house in the Lower Saxon town since the first quarter of the 19th century and ran a textile wholesaler and department store there. The last generation of the Schwabe-Barlewin family to live in Varel, Curt with his wife Frieda, née Roseno, and their two sons Arthur David and Paul Jakob fled to the USA in September / October 1938, a few days before the Reichspogromnacht .
The architecture of the building included many different stylistic elements and was considered unique in the Oldenburger Land. The round bay window on the corner of Haferkamp and Neumarktstraße stood out as a special feature. This house was also characterized by the mighty entrance portal of the warehouse, secured by a two meter high, ornate metal gate. Finally, a huge, almost room-high tiled stove rounded off the impression. The property was sold to a non-Jewish Vareler in 1940 under National Socialist pressure. In the course of the “reparation”, it came back into the possession of Curt Schwabe-Barlewin in 1956. In 1974 the city of Varel bought the property from its heirs, and in 1975 - despite the concerns of monument preservers and Varel citizens - they had the property demolished for traffic planning reasons. In 1975 the building was demolished because it was in disrepair and for traffic planning considerations. Only a few remains of the tiled stove could be recovered by the local historian Volker Pape.
The former garden of the Schwabe family has been tended by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland since 2014 . For this purpose, an orchard was created on the garden property and signs were set up explaining the trees and nesting aids.
