Schwarzbachtrasse project

The Schwarzbachtrasse is a railway line laid out in the 19th century as the Wuppertal-Oberbarmen / Wuppertal-Wichlinghausen railway line. After the rail traffic was shut down years ago, it was opened in 2018/2019 by the Wuppertal Movement e. V. converted into a pedestrian and bike path. To this end, the city of Wuppertal has acquired the plot of land from the railway and granted the Wuppertal Movement eV a heritable building right for the construction phase . The aim was and is to make the Schwarzbach route - like the Nordbahntrasse before it - available as a public route.

The Schwarzbachtrasse leads over approx. 2 km from the northern railway line at the level of the former Wichlinghausen station in an S-shaped loop down to the bottom of the valley to Langerfeld and connects around 50,000 residents to the northern railway line. It includes four bridges, a 29 m high and 179 m long viaduct over the Schwarzbach road and the 290 m long Wichlinghauser tunnel .

The conversion was funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BME) with funds from the National Climate Initiative. Thanks to the committed controlling of the Wuppertal movement, the costs could be kept within the estimated approx. € 3.6 million will be held.

The work was largely completed by the end of 2019. The missing tunnel lighting has been installed since February 2020.

The official opening with a citizens' festival was planned for spring 2020, but has been postponed indefinitely due to the corona pandemic.
