When Black Sun ( Danish Sort sol ) in is Danish the natural spectacle of starlings referred. Since the starlings swarm before sunset , the impression can arise that the low-lying sun has been darkened, hence the concept formation. The term sort sol has only been used since 1994.

In the German-Danish border region, the flight maneuvers can be observed in spring and autumn, especially in the marshland of Tondern and North Frisia . Hundreds of thousands of migratory birds find a resting place here when they switch between the northern European breeding areas and the southern winter quarters. The spectacle regularly attracts numerous bird watchers from the surrounding area.
