List of domestic dogs |
Schwarzer is a name for the types and strokes of the old German herding dogs . The blacks are assigned to two types: the South German and the East or Central German type.
South German type
The black old Germans of southern Germany differ significantly from the East German blacks. Among the shepherds in southern Germany, Württemberg and Franconia, the black was one of the classic herding dogs and was highly regarded. Here the blacks are mostly large dogs with long-haired, curly or stick-haired fur, upright, tilted or floppy ears and a rather inconsistent appearance, the size of which varies between 55 and 70 cm. They have a medium stimulus threshold and natural sharpness . Their independence is praised, it enables them to act independently.
East or central German type
In appearance, this type corresponds roughly to the Belgian Groenendael , but is slightly smaller. The East German blacks are still quite common in the herds of the new federal states. They are usually long-haired with a dense undercoat and are of small to medium size of around 55 cm and quite uniform in appearance. They are bred to tend large flocks; compact, not too heavy animals with a pronounced willingness to work, docile and spirited. The three colors (black, yellow cheek and fox) of the East and Central German herding dogs are not differentiated in breeding and may be paired with each other. The different colors can appear together within one litter.
