This species differs from the other representatives of the black and white colobus monkeys by its completely black fur ; the white shoulder manes or whiskers present in the other species are missing. The body is slim, the tail is very long. As with all colobus monkeys, the thumb has receded as an adaptation to the tree-dwelling way of life.
distribution and habitat
Black colobus monkeys live in central Africa . Their distribution area includes southern Cameroon , Equatorial Guinea including the island of Bioko and Gabon , they may also live in the Republic of the Congo . Their habitat are tropical rainforests .
Way of life
These primates are diurnal and mostly stay in the trees. In contrast to other black-and-white colobus monkeys, they do not live in harem groups with just one male, but in multi-male groups with several females and their offspring. That is why the districts are larger.
In contrast to the other, predominantly leaf-eating black and white colobus monkeys, these animals mainly eat seeds, occasionally supplemented by young leaves, fruits and flowers. The teeth of this species are larger and flatter as an adaptation than in the other representatives of their genus.
threat
The main threats are the ongoing destruction of their habitat and hunting for their fur and meat. The IUCN lists the species as endangered ( vulnerable ).
