Black chalk pit
The black chalk pit in Vehre is today a natural monument on the north-eastern edge of the Belmer district of Vehre. It has a 15 m outcrop to the east. In the black chalk pit , a rock called black chalk was mined until 1967 , which was mainly used for the production of colorants and was even exported after its processing. However, this is not chalk , but a charred oil shale . The anoxic environment at the bottom of a Jurassic shallow sea resulted in an accumulation of organic matter in the clayey-silty sediment of the seabed. From this, through diagenetic solidification, oil shale emerged, and through the carbonization of this oil shale due to the heat of the Bramsch pluton during the Cretaceous period , the so-called "black chalk" was created.
