The Schwedlersee is an artificial lake in the Frankfurt Osthafen in Frankfurt am Main . The lake was excavated for the expansion of the northern port basin, but was never connected to it. The pit filled with groundwater and has served as a leisure area or swimming pool for a swimming club ever since.
The approximately 9,500 m² large, almost square and average 2.40 m deep lake is named after the civil engineer Johann Wilhelm Schwedler . The expansion of the port, which was envisaged at the beginning of the 20th century, turned out to be obsolete, and the lake passed into private ownership.
The water has no connection to the Main and is fed by groundwater. In the past, however, there were multiple floods during floods, which in some cases made subsequent cleaning actions necessary. The lake is surrounded by thick vegetation - trees and bushes. There are numerous species of fish in it. The fauna also includes kingfishers and cormorants, dragonflies, turtles and mussels. On the west side is the clubhouse of the 1st Frankfurt Swimming Club 1891 eV (EFSC) - today part of the Frankfurt Swimming Community - one of the oldest German swimming clubs that has been using the lake as its own private pool since May 1920.
