Swiss Association of General Public Libraries

The Swiss Association of General Public Libraries (SAB) is an association with the aim of promoting public libraries in Switzerland. The structure of the association consists regionally of the regional group German-speaking Switzerland and the regional group Western Switzerland, and nationally of the central board and the central secretariat.

Members

The SAB unites some community, district, city ​​libraries , regional libraries and school libraries . The association consists of both individual members (librarians) and collective members (general public libraries). SAB members benefit from the following offers:

  • Further training events, workshops
  • Study trips

Regional groups

The SAB is divided into regional language groups. The seat of the German-speaking regional group is, like the central secretariat, in Solothurn . The French-speaking regional group is based in Lausanne .

The SAB is an interest group of the BIS association .

Most important goals and tasks of the SAB

  • The SAB represents and promotes the interests of its members in public bodies and in public. It promotes and coordinates collaboration between libraries.
  • The SAB offers services and work aids (working techniques, guidelines, standard authority files , manuals) for the organization and administration of public libraries.
  • The SAB organizes basic training for employees in smaller community and school libraries (SAB training). Its range of further training covers all areas of practical library work, from marketing to inventory management, from modern means of communication to management courses.
  • The SAB is committed to the further development of public libraries and the promotion of library networks. It examines the situation of the library system, develops a comprehensive library concept, observes developments and supports the libraries in integrating new tasks.
  • The SAB develops and defines guidelines for general public libraries; such as the guidelines for community libraries, the guidelines for school libraries, the library plan 2000, the training guidelines, guidelines for IT in libraries and work technology (currently AT7). Many libraries in large cities, towns and schools are run according to the guidelines of the SAB. The guidelines of the SAB provide information on adequate staff and media resources, staff remuneration and employment conditions, framework conditions for architects and library suppliers, arguments for budget requests
