The Swiss University Conference (SUK) - Conférence universitaire suisse (CUS) - Conferenza universitaria svizzera (CUS) was the joint body of the Confederation and the cantons for university-political cooperation in Switzerland . It was set up on January 1, 2001 as the successor organization to the (older) Swiss University Conference (which was founded in 1969) through the agreement between the federal government and the university cantons on cooperation in the university sector. From January 1, 2015, the newly constituted (younger) Swiss University Conference took over in the composition of the plenary assembly or the university council, the coordination tasks between the Confederation and the cantons.

tasks

The SUC had binding decision-making powers in defined areas and had the following tasks:

  • Adoption of framework regulations on standard study times and on the recognition of study achievements and degrees, which are binding for the parties to the agreement;
  • Granting of project-related contributions;
  • periodic assessment of the allocation of national research priorities from the point of view of a nationwide division of tasks among the universities;
  • Recognition of institutions or courses of study;
  • Issuing guidelines for the evaluation of teaching and research;
  • Issuing guidelines for implementing knowledge in research.
  • In addition, the SUC makes recommendations for cooperation, for multi-year planning and for a balanced division of labor in the university sector, it provides information about its business and consults the parties concerned.
  • Annual recommendation to use a numerus clausus and to carry out the aptitude test for medical studies in medicine to the university cantons with medical training in Switzerland if the training capacity is exceeded by 20% and the problem cannot be solved by diversions.

composition

The SUK was composed of the education directors of the university cantons, two education directors from non-university cantons, the State Secretary for Education and Research and the President of the ETH Board. The President of the Rectors' Conference of the Swiss Universities, the Vice-Director "Education" in the State Secretariat for Education and Research, and the Director of the Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology had a seat in an advisory capacity. The business of the SUC was managed by a general secretariat, which also accompanies the commissions of the SUC: the Conference of Heads of Service for Higher Education, the Department for University Buildings and the Steering Committees for Equal Opportunities, Consortium of University Libraries and Cost Accounting.

The SUC worked closely with the Rectors' Conference of the Swiss Universities , which is entrusted with dealing with business of an academic nature.
