Swimming badge (GDR)

The swimming badge (commonly known as swimming level ) was awarded in three stages in the GDR and served as evidence of swimming performance.

Conditions for the award

Breaststroke , back crawl , crawl swimming or butterfly swimming could be selected as swimming types . The following requirements applied in the 1970s and 1980s (prior to that, different requirements applied).

Elementary level

To reach the basic level, you had to swim 100 m in any type of swim. Plus any jump into deep water.

Level I.

To reach level I, you either had to swim 100 m in any swimming mode; or 25 m in one swim type and another 25 m in another swim type. There was no time limit. To do this, head forward into deep water.

Stage II

For level II, you had to swim 100 m in one type of swim and 50 m in another type of swim without a time limit and take a start jump.

Stage III

For level III, you had to swim 100 m in one type of swim and a further 100 m in another type of swim in a maximum time - alternatively 400 m in one type of swim - and take a start jump.

Maximum times for 100 m

Grade 4 and younger students 3:30 min
Grade 5 and 6 students 3:00 min
Grade 7 and 8 students 2:45 min
Grade 9 and older students 2:30 min
