According to various shipping regulations in Germany , Austria and Switzerland, a floating device is “a floating construction with mechanical devices which is intended to be used for work on waterways or in ports, such as B. excavators, elevators, jacks, cranes ”.

Floating devices are not permanently connected to the ground. They can be equipped with their own drive, but are often towed or pushed to their location by other vehicles. They can be distinguished from other vehicles by their own day and night license plates (flags, balls, position lights).

Due to their peculiarities (limited maneuverability, purpose), special avoidance rules apply when approaching and passing floating devices.
