The Oststadt swimming center is a combined indoor and outdoor swimming pool in Essen 's Freisenbruch district .

history

In the southern part of Freisenbruch, bordering the Bergmannsfeld housing estate, the first construction phase, namely the outdoor pool, was opened in 1974. The indoor swimming pool followed three years later. In 1980, with the completion of the teaching pool, the third construction phase was opened to the public. In 2004 a sports and health center of the local sports club MTG Horst-Essen was opened. In 2012 around 120,000 visitors were counted.

In June 2013 the indoor pool closed due to the start of fundamental renovation work. With the renovation costs totaling 5.1 million euros, the entrance area was redesigned, the water treatment system, heating, ventilation and chlorine system modernized, the lighting, tiles and floors renewed, the baby pool adapted to current standards and a solar system installed on the roof which also heated the water in the outdoor pool. On February 2, 2015, the bath was reopened to the public.

outdoor pool

On almost 27,000 square meters there are large lawns as well as a few sports and playgrounds. This includes four swimming pools. The swimmer's pool, on the southern side of which is bordered by a stepped sun terrace, has lanes that are 21 meters wide and 50 meters long, with the eastern side offering a raised base for non-swimmers. Next to it there is a 3.5 meter deep, 8 by 12 meter diving pool with a 1 meter and a 3 meter diving board. The surveillance tower for the lifeguard stands close by. A little to the southwest of these two pools is a 50-meter-long and 20-meter-wide non-swimmer pool with a slide. To the east of the swimmers' pool there is a round baby pool with a playground. There are also separate changing rooms for the outside area, but the indoor pool changing rooms can also be used when the weather is cooler. There is also a kiosk outside.

Indoor swimming pool

A staircase from the entrance area leads to the hall changing rooms and then to the indoor pool. This has a ten meter wide multi-purpose pool with 25 meter lanes. There is also a 12.5 by 9 meter teaching pool with a slide, as well as a round paddling pool with a diameter of 4.5 meters. There are also two solariums. The water channel, which led from the indoor area directly into the outdoor pool, was replaced by a sports room during the renovation work between 2013 and 2015.

Transport links

The Essen-Eiberg S-Bahn station connects the swimming pool with the S1 S-Bahn line. Lines 164, 174 and 184 of the Ruhrbahn run from its own bus stop .
