MTG Horst-Essen
The MTG Horst-Essen - more precisely Märkische Turngemeinde Horst 1881 e. V. - Essen - is a sports club from Essen-Horst . It consists of 14 departments and with 3600 members is the largest popular sports club in Essen (as of 2019).
Club development
In 1881 the gymnastics club of the Märkische municipalities in Horst bei Steele was founded in 1881 . In 1923 the association had 142 predominantly young people. The handball department was launched in 1926, followed by track and field athletes around 1930. The football department founded in 1930 left MTG in 1931 and formed its own club, 1. FC Eiberg. In 1935 the club changed its name to Märkische Turngemeinde Horst . During the Second World War , the sports business came to a standstill. In 1945 the gymnastics and athletics divisions were brought back to life.

- Wheelchair dance : there is a wheelchair dance group in popular sports. Some couples also contest competitions and / or belong to the cross-club formation NRWheelers .
Table tennis
Activities from 1941 were already reported, but the table tennis department was officially founded in 1972. A year later the West German Table Tennis Association WTTV was joined. In the 1979/80 season 13 teams were active, in 1988 the division had 166 members. After several promotions under the direction of the manager and sponsor Heinz Backhaus, the first men's team reached the 2nd Bundesliga in 1991. Three years later, Petr Korbel , Christian Franzel, Tommy Danielsson, Manfred Nieswand , Frank Backhaus, Matthias Hüttemann, Michael Höhl and Frank Wolter became champions here and were promoted to the 1st Bundesliga. The men's table tennis team played in the Bundesliga in the 1995/96 season . However, one had to leave this one year later. In 1997 the team was withdrawn for financial reasons.
In the 2010/11 season, six men's, one women's and five junior teams are registered, with the first men's team playing in the association league.
