The Rüttenscheid swimming center is an indoor swimming pool in the Rüttenscheid district of Essen . All pools combined, it offers the largest water surface of all indoor pools in Essen and is the most popular indoor pool in the city. It is also of central importance for swimming in Essen.

history

At the end of 1973, the Essen City Council decided to build the swimming pool in Rüttenscheid. The cornerstone ceremony followed in July 1974 in the presence of the then mayor Horst Katzor . The swimming center finally opened on December 6, 1975. At that time, the construction cost the equivalent of 13 million euros.

Furnishing

The only 50-meter indoor pool in the city of Essen is located in a separate sports hall with a 21-meter-wide sports pool with 50-meter lanes. This hall with its own changing rooms can mostly be used independently for schools and clubs. Some of it is also open to the public.

Another hall forms the public area and offers a 12.5 meter wide multi-purpose pool with 25 meter lanes, a teaching pool measuring 12.5 by 8 meters and a 5.5 by 4 meter children's pool. The bathroom is complemented by two sun beds. A lawn outside the hall can be used in summer.

Renovation work 2007/2008

Due to serious damage to the glued wood beams supporting the roof, the entire swimming center was closed for safety reasons on February 6, 2007, sensitized by the collapse of the Bad Reichenhall ice rink a year earlier. This came from the same time and its roof was constructed similarly. The glue in the girders of the 30-year-old Rüttenscheider swimming pool dissolved over time and cracks appeared. Ventilation holes in the beams that were no longer permitted had to be closed.

First of all, in March 2007 the city of Essen provided two million euros in renovation costs through a supplementary business plan. In June 2007 a redevelopment concept was established. The contract was awarded to a specialized company in Ulm for the repair of the load-bearing laminated wood beams of the roof structure. The new wooden structure on the renovated wooden beams is covered by an aluminum gable roof. In addition, the ventilation, lighting, fire protection, all tile coverings, the entire water treatment system and the glass facade of the bathroom were renewed.

On July 21, 2008, the sports hall with the 50-meter pool was reopened and was only accessible via a temporary entrance. The opening of the entire swimming center fell on September 1, 2008. The total renovation costs amounted to 3.25 million euros, twice the amount originally estimated.

Statistics until 2007

Until it was closed in February 2007 due to damage to safety-relevant roof racks, the indoor pool had around 300,000 visitors a year. Of these, almost 70 percent were bathers, around 18 percent were school classes and around 12 percent were clubs.

Every year around 32,000 cubic meters of water, 1.2 million kWh of electricity and 4.1 million kWh of gas were used for heating. That is around 1000 euros in energy costs per day or 362,500 euros per year.
