Scotty Marion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Scotty Alan Marion (*? In Huntsville , Alabama ; † probably August 8, 2003 Eastern Switzerland) was an American paraglider pilot .

He got into flying when he was working as a hunting guide in Alaska and was able to watch paragliders there. Marion, who already had a pilot license for small aircraft, said that paragliding was the perfect compromise between the risks of bear hunting and flying in a small plane .

Marion was the first American to win a PWC run.

On Friday, August 8th, 2003, Marion started on a cross-country flight , in which he wanted to set a new course record, from the Ebenalp in Appenzell . He was last seen on Friday at around 1 p.m. while flying over from Chäserrugg in the direction of Flums. After that his track is lost. Since his disappearance was not noticed immediately, a major search operation did not begin until the following Monday. Since the weather for cross-country flights was very good that Friday and no precise flight intentions were known, the area in which Marion could have crashed or landed is enormous. The search was continued for a long time by private parties. However, to date (December 2011) no trace of him or his paraglider has been found.
