The book Scouting for Boys was written by Robert Baden-Powell , founder of the Boy Scouts. It was published in 1908 and forms the basis of the worldwide scouting movement . With a total print run of around 150 million copies, Scouting for Boys is one of the most printed books in the world.

Content

In his work, Baden-Powell processed not only the impressions he had made as an officer with young scouts , especially in the defense of Mafeking , but also the experience he had gained at the first boy scout trial camp in 1907 on Brownsea Island . In the book, Baden-Powell describes his idea of being a boy scout in nine chapters.

The book is divided into campfire sections that were suitable to be read in group lessons or at the campfire. It first appeared as a serialized story in a newspaper. After it was first published as a book, Baden-Powell revised it frequently, which is why there are differences in content between the individual editions.

It replaced the military textbook Aids to Scouting , which, contrary to its concerns, also found many young readers.

German broadcasts

The book was translated into German in 1909 by Alexander Lion and Maximilian Bayer under the title The Pathfinder Book ; based on Scouting for Boys , it has been changed in essential points by the authors. In 1911 another transmission by Karl Hellwig appeared close to the source. His little scouting book went largely unnoticed, however, since large parts of the German scout movement had already decided in favor of the Lion's transmission as a basis for work.

Newer German-language editions bear the title pathfinder , regardless of the translator . They are mostly based on the edition of the Swiss Scout Association, first published in Zurich in 1923 .
