The Seattle Central Library is a municipal library . The eleven-story, 34,000 m², glass and steel building was designed by the architects Rem Koolhaas and Joshua Prince-Ramus in the style of deconstructivism and opened in 2004. The architecture and engineering firms Magnusson Klemencic Associates and Arup were involved in the construction.

In 2007, the American Institute of Architects ( America's Favorite Architecture ) listed the building in 108th place. The architecture criticism received the building with divided opinion. While the New Yorker praised the architecture as innovative, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer criticized the building as too opulent. The library building received u. a. the Platinum Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and the AIA Honor Award for Architecture .

The history of librarianship in Seattle began in 1891. The current library building is the third at this point. In the first year the library had over two million visitors. The inventory amounts to over 1.45 million media.
