Life

Until around 1750, almost only organ-makers who had immigrated to the Markgräflerland were active, for example from Alsace and Switzerland. Sebastian Fichslin in Sulzburg was an exception . He had a small sphere of activity and only supplied small organs because the parishes in the Markgräflerland, which had been badly affected by the Thirty Years' War and the Palatinate and Spanish War of Succession , could not afford expensive instruments at that time . According to "uncertain sources" he is said to have died around 1727 very old.

Organ works by Sebastian Fichslin have not survived. They don't appear to have been of high quality. Repairs had to be carried out repeatedly on the organ that was manufactured for St. Martin in Staufen im Breisgau on the basis of a contract from 1715.

What has been preserved is the case of the organ that he delivered to the Church of St. Cyriak (Sulzburg) around 1719 . This organ was rebuilt in 1759 (possibly by Johann Hug). The middle part of the case was lowered and decorated with a cartridge bearing the inscription: “Everything / that has breath / praise the Lord / Alleluia. / Ren. Men. Jul. 1759 ". In this condition, the case, one of the oldest in Baden, has been preserved to this day.

In 1800 Xaver Bernauer built a new organ into Sebastian Fichslin's case , one of the two that have been preserved from this master. The instrument is now in the Church of St. Giles (St. Ilgen (Sulzburg))
