Six-fold binding

A six-fold bond is a chemical bond made up of six bonding electron pairs . Theoretically, six-fold bonds are possible with diatomic molecules of the 6th subgroup (dichromium Cr 2 , dimolybdenum Mo 2 and diwungfram W 2 ) as well as with diurane U 2 . The overlap of the orbitals is, however, partly incomplete and antibonding orbitals are partly occupied, so that the actual effective bond order does not reach six in any of these cases. The respective effective bond order is 3.5 for Cr 2 , 5.2 for Mo 2 and W 2 and 4.2 for U 2 , so that at most Mo 2 and W 2 can approximately be referred to as a six-fold bond .
