The six-gill sharks ( Hexanchus ) are a genus of primitive sharks from the order of the Hexanchiformes that live in deep water . The genus includes only three recent species with the blunt-nosed six-gill shark ( Hexanchus griseus ), the bigeye six- gill shark ( Hexanchus nakamurai ) and Hexanchus vitulus .
features
Six-gill sharks are characterized by the six gill slits on each side of the head, which distinguish them from all other sharks today, which usually have five gill slits. They are simply colored with no spots or dark fin tips. Their lower teeth are large, flat, and comb-like with one larger and eight to ten smaller tips.
