A second line parade during Mardi Gras

Second Line is a traditional marching band parade in New Orleans , Louisiana . The “Main Line” is the main part of the parade in which the musicians play. Those who follow the band belong to the so-called "second line". Usually there is dancing within the second line . In addition, umbrellas are rotated (see picture) and handkerchiefs waved. All of this is known as "second lining". It is considered one of the most essential New Orleans art forms. Second lines roam the streets especially during Mardi Gras and jazz funerals .

The second-line tradition was spread beyond the New Orleans borders, yet it remains most common in the largest city in the state of Louisiana.
